A pawn shop chain has agreed to shell out millions of dollars to settle a class action lawsuit over a data breach that exposed customers’ sensitive information.

According to the settlement administrator’s portal, Pawn America, which owns and operates pawn stores in Minnesota and Wisconsin, has agreed to pay $3.185 million to settle the lawsuit that was filed after hackers gained access to its network.

On or around September 28th, 2021, the network of the company and its affiliates experienced a ransomware attack that was discovered by Pawn America on October 3rd 2021, according to the settlement.

The company started to inform customers of the incident on November 19th, 2021.

The breach impacted at least 530,000 customers, exposing their full names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, dates of birth and financial account information.

Settlement class members are eligible to receive up to $5,000 for documented losses that arose as a result of the data breach.

Without supplying documentation for loses, claimants can receive $30, while California claimants can receive $50.

The proposed settlement total includes about $1 million for attorneys’ fees.

The deadline to object to the settlement is June 5th. Claims must be submitted by July 6th. A final court hearing on the matter is set for September 9th.
