Summary

  • KDE Plasma 6.7 is in final beta; devs have shifted from adding features to fixing bugs.
  • Notable fixes: system tray Qt widget glitch, laptop brightness OSD loop, disappearing renamed desktop files.
  • Plasma 6.7 launches June 16; wait for your distro to package the update.

Keeping tabs on the development of an upcoming version of a Linux kernel, distro, or desktop environment is always a win-win. If the next version is a long way away from releasing, you can satiate your excitement by checking out all the cool new features that are getting added on a weekly basis. As the release date nears, the developers move away from adding features and move toward bug fixes, which aren’t nearly as exciting, but it does mean it will release soon.

I’ve been checking out KDE Plasma 6.7 and all the awesome things being added to it over the past few weeks, and now the development team have moved into last-minute bug fixes. They may not be the most riveting of changes, but given how 6.7 will release in two week’s time, I’m not complaining.

As reported by Linuxiac, KDE Plasma 6.7 has entered its final beta. Whenever an open-source project update nears release, people tend to stop adding new features and begin fixing the ones that are already in the new version. The KDE team published a changelog of all the fixes added to KDE Plasma 6.7 over the past week, and there are some really strange entries in there:

Worked around an oddly-specific issue in Qt that could make widgets break when enabled in the System Tray after having previously disabled them and then restarted the computer. (Tobias Fella, KDE Bugzilla #520144)

Worked around an issue with the hardware or firmware on specific laptops that could trigger an infinite stream of keyboard brightness OSDs after closing the lid. (Vitaly Repin, powerdevil MR #632)

Fixed an issue that could make a renamed file on the desktop visually disappear (it still existed, and could be accessed through Dolphin) while multiple Activities were in use, or move to another location when there was only one Activity. (Akseli Lahtinen, KDE Bugzilla #520633 and KDE Bugzilla #511920)

With KDE Plasma 6.7 scheduled to release June 16th, it won’t be long now until it’s ready. Then it’s just a matter of waiting for your distro of choice to update its version of KDE Plasma to 6.7.
