From open-office plans to hybrid job options, the modern workplace has evolved for more than just a small sector of employees. The ability to work from anywhere has become widely accessible, but it’s not without some persistent challenges.

According to the CDW Workplace Modernization Research Report, 70% of IT decision-makers across industries struggle with device or network diversity in hybrid environments. Yet 49% of the survey’s respondents feel that their endpoint updates are extremely effective. This perceived success despite the complexity is likely due to strong policy enforcement.

And since work isn’t confined to the four walls of the office, there has been a growing shift toward modern identity management, with 36% of respondents adopting passwordless security.

Still, security ranks high on the list of challenges in platform consolidation, with 61% of respondents highlighting the issue. Hopefully, this issue of HealthTech will highlight how to create a secure, well-connected modern workplace for healthcare organizations.

Designing a Flexible and Secure Workplace in Healthcare

In “Health Systems Make Remote Work an Integral Part of Operations,” Virginia-based Sentara Health shares its hybrid-work approach and how the model can be better integrated as part of a long-term strategy.

“We’d started our journey to the cloud well before the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Senior Vice

President and CTO Jeffrey Thomas. Moving work to virtual desktop environments and relying on the cloud “gave us a way to let people work securely wherever they were and whenever they needed,” he adds.

To transform physical spaces so that they can improve collaboration, some healthcare organizations like Reid Health are using digital whiteboards or interactive screens. This is explored in “Finding the ‘Centerpiece’ for a Smarter Patient Room.” The frictionless approach helps to enhance and add value to in-person work.

“This investment clearly sends a message to clinicians that we are committed to decreasing that burden on our first-line staff, so I think it speaks volumes,” says Reid Health’s Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Misti Foust-Cofield.
