Ever wonder which voice assistant knows your weather the best? For the past couple of months, I’ve been testing out the big three — Amazon’s Alexa Plus, Google Gemini for Home (which is busy replacing Google Assistant) and Apple’s Siri AI — to see who gets the weather right most often. They all pull their weather data from the internet, but their sources and algorithms lead to drastically different results.

My high desert city makes an excellent review location for weather reports, from the federal cuts to weather stations and forecast funding to our many microclimates coexisting under the Cascade Mountains. It’s the perfect spot for voice assistants to test their mettle, plus the online sources they draw their weather data from, allowing us to see which is accurate in tough conditions.

If you like asking your voice assistant about today’s weather as you prep for work, school or even camping plans, here are my real-world results, and which assistant ultimately proved best.

Alexa Plus: The chatty, overconfident relative

Alexa’s weather responses are chatty and often randomized with extra info.

Wow, Alexa loves to chat. While the AI voice assistant has several personalities to pick from, mine is on the standard setting but frequently enjoys talking things out.

Not only does Alexa typically have the longest weather reports, but it also provides the most detail, for better and worse. Alexa Plus is the voice assistant to get extra tidbits about the wind level, snow advisories, air quality levels, chances of rain in the afternoon and other data, some more useful than others. The voice assistant also frequently makes asides, like explaining, “It’s 55 out but feels more like 65” due to the sun and lack of wind or other weather elements.

Exact weather predictions were generally accurate, but the assistant occasionally slipped up, such as predicting rain when none materialized. Alexa often overestimated the highs and lows in my area by a few degrees, too.

Amazon must have Alexa equipped with some sort of randomizer because none of this info is guaranteed, and the greetings and phrasing tend to change regularly. It’s fun, but it’s a little wild and not always accurate. A few times, Alexa tried to tell me my desert climate was at “99% humidity,” possibly because some online discussion about relative humidity got mixed in.

If you like extra info and don’t mind things being random, Alexa Plus may be your best pick, although the accuracy of its weather report isn’t always top-notch. Keep in mind, Alexa Plus is free with an Amazon Prime subscription but will otherwise cost around $20 per month. Also, while I tested the standard version of Alexa Plus, choosing different personalities or asking it to be more terse can help cut down on the info you get, so Alexa has plenty of customization options available here.

Gemini for Home: The no-nonsense reporter

Gemini tend to prefer accuracy overall.

Interestingly, Gemini on my Nest Hub narrowed results down to my exact neighborhood instead of the city as a whole. I don’t know how much this affected weather predictions, but Gemini proved the most accurate out of the voice assistants. Its highs and lows were typically accurate within a degree or two, and it didn’t overestimate like Alexa did. (If anything, it tended to undershoot the highs.)

While a quick “Hey Google” may yield the best weather reports, the voice assistant doesn’t provide much more info. Sometimes Gemini added info about overcast skies or rain, but nothing to the extent of Alexa.

If short and sweet is your preference, this is the most reliable option. I also like Gemini’s visuals best, with the forecast divided into hours so you can easily see when temperatures reach their height or when clouds are likely to move in.

Siri: The hesitant moderate

The information Siri proved was brief compared to the other voice assistants.

While not quite as formal as Gemini, Siri is likewise terse on weather reports and didn’t volunteer any extra info, like cloudy skies or rain, unless specifically asked in follow-up questions.

As for accuracy, Siri’s estimates were typically somewhere between Alexa’s slightly overblown expectations and Gemini’s more conservative approach, making it the moderate of the bunch.

That makes Siri a reasonable option for weather predictions, except I noticed what seemed like an odd bug where Apple’s voice assistant would suddenly forecast a high about five degrees higher than the other options and way off the mark. Sometimes it would do the same with lows, citing a temperature five degrees lower than what they actually reached.

I’m not sure why this discrepancy crept in, but it made Siri less reliable over time during my daily tests.

If you have an eye on accuracy and reliable weather reports when heading out in the morning, I recommend Gemini’s brief but good weather summaries. If you can get them on a smart display, like a Nest Hub, it also offers my favorite accompanying graphics.

Alexa Plus, however, wins for the sheer amount of information it provides and its chatty nature. You may never be sure what your weather report will include, but it’s likely to have a bit of everything, and you can ask Alexa to tone it down if need be.

Siri, meanwhile, had some issues suddenly overshooting or undershooting the mark and didn’t provide any helpful details, making it the least effective at handling your weather needs.

Who gives the most accurate current temperature readings?

Along with predictions, I also tested out voice assistant abilities to give current temperature readings. Since I have smart thermostats and plenty of portable air quality monitors from my testing, this was easy to double-check and see how they performed.

The voice assistants typically stayed within a couple of degrees of the temperature outside my house. In most cases, they were a degree or two lower, but nothing problematic.

The exception is Siri, where that odd bug estimating the temperature about five degrees higher than it was crept in once more. I couldn’t figure out what caused that bug, but it did make Siri occasionally wrong in contrast to the other voice assistants.

A final tip now that you have the lowdown on the weather: You can sync up weather reports, traffic reports, news and other tidbits in a single morning routine so voice assistants provide you with all this information at once, usually with a phrase like “Good morning.” It can be a timesaver — see my guide for more information.
