Guten Tag from DW’s newsroom in Bonn, where there is still a lot of Christmas shopping to be done.

Danke schön for joining us as Germany awaits a big debate on pensions, with the government hoping for a majority from within its own ranks.

Bavaria’s conservative Christian Democrats want to expand pensions for women who have had children, but some younger conservatives are opposed on the grounds of cost for future generations.

That leaves the coalition worried that it might not achieve a majority, although the situation has eased with the socialist Left Party saying it will abstain.
