When AI Learns To Feel: How A Global Hackathon Is Defining The Future Of Creative Media

AI and human creativity are undergoing a structural transformation in their relationship that better models or faster inference chips alone cannot explain. Something more fundamental is changing. AI is no longer being used just to generate content. It’s starting to change how audiences experience identity, emotion, storytelling, music and digital culture in real time. And the implications for every layer of the media stack, from how content is created to how it’s consumed – are only starting to come into focus.

The media industry is at a crossroads. Generative AI has already revolutionised advertising, music production, film pre-production and social publishing workflows. But these initial upheavals were mostly about efficiency: doing the same things, but faster and cheaper. Now what is emerging is something entirely different. Builders are starting to design systems where AI is not a production tool but a creative partner – where the audience itself is a variable that the system adapts to, where digital personas have memory and evolve, where the line between content and experience dissolves.

Years of algorithmic personalisation have conditioned audiences to expect media that respond to them – not just media that are curated. There is a huge difference. Curation chooses from what is already there. Adaptation is creating something new from who you are and how you are feeling and how you are engaging right now. This is the design space that forward-looking builders are now exploring, and it requires a fundamentally different approach for how AI systems are architected, deployed, and evaluated.

Hackathons have become one of the best environments for this type of exploration. The research on innovation is clear: time-constrained, high-stakes collaborative environments accelerate creative problem-solving in ways that traditional product development timelines rarely replicate. A seven-day hackathon compresses the time from idea to prototype, forces tough architectural decisions under duress, and reveals unexpected convergences between disciplines that otherwise would have remained siloed. As the creative AI toolchain matures, with its design patterns still being written, these condensed experimentation environments are producing some of the most architecturally interesting work anywhere in the industry.

Inside the experimentation lab: Creative AI & Digital Media Hackathon 2026

The Creative AI & Digital Media Hackathon 2026, April 23–29, was just such a concentrated laboratory. The event was entirely online, spread across a seven-day sprint, and brought together more than 1,050 participants in 356 teams from over 40 countries. Scale matters – not that big numbers alone equal quality, but that international participation at this level results in the kind of diverse problem framing that leads to really unexpected solutions. A team in Lagos creates a synthetic persona differently than a team in Warsaw or Jakarta. The submissions showed that diversity.

The hackathon was organised into five challenge tracks: AI for Film & Video, Music & Audio Creation, Virtual Influencers & Digital Personas, Visual Art & Design, and Interactive & Viral Experiences. These tracks were intentionally broad enough to allow for open-ended exploration while being focused enough to direct teams towards the specific intersection of AI and cultural media production. The event was framed not as a coding competition, but as an innovation ecosystem — with structured mentorship, office hours, architecture review sessions and go-to-market coaching happening alongside the build sprint itself.

The judges were from Apple, Meta, Google, ElevenLabs and eBay. The prize pool was over $10,000 in cash and credits, bolstered by infrastructure from sponsors such as Replicate, Interview Cake, CodeCrafters and Featherless.ai. But the prizes weren’t the bigger result. It was a map of technical patterns emerging across the top projects – a set of converging signals about where AI-native media actually is going.

The emerging technical patterns

Emotionally adaptive media systems

So what did the hackathon show us? It showed us a distinct change in the way AI systems are being designed. Not as passive tools, but as adaptive creative engines that can react, evolve and generate media by themselves. In a field of more than 1,050 participants and 356 teams from over 40 countries, the best projects went beyond basic generative AI demos to explore persistent memory, emotionally responsive storytelling, autonomous content creation, and AI-native creative experiences.

Several technical patterns consistently emerged across the winning projects:

  • Emotionally responsive media systems that adapt the narrative flow in real-time based on audience reactions.
  • Persistent AI Personas, with memory, personality evolution and autonomous publishing.
  • Voice-to-music production pipelines that turn humming or speech into fully produced tracks.
  • Generative visual systems driven by environmental cues such as ambient sound.
  • Synthetic cultural reconstruction tools that simulate artistic styles, identity, and personal storytelling.

Winners

Grand Prize – MoodScore (Krishna Agrawal)

Real-time adaptive cinema platform with scene, pacing and audio scoring adapted to live facial emotion analysis. This system is built using ElevenLabs, Replicate, and a custom emotion-routing model hosted on Hugging Face.

First Runner Up – Lore (Team 4U)

A voice-oriented, genre-conditioned generative AI music production system which converts humming or sung melodies into fully produced tracks across multiple genres.

Second Runner-Up — Phantom (Derek Moyo)

A persistent AI influencer platform with “Zara,” an AI persona that remembers conversations, adapts personality traits, and autonomously creates social content.

 Best Vibe Award — DriftCanvas (Naman Modi)

A generative visual art installation that transforms ambient sound into continuously evolving real-time visuals through live audio signal analysis.

Special Recognition — GhostWriter.fm (Team Mensah)

A synthetic music generation platform creating original songs in imagined collaborative styles of artists who never worked together.

Special Recognition — EchoSelf (Team Up66)

An AI journaling system that converts diary entries into narrated podcast episodes voiced by an AI-generated version of the user.

Meet the judging panel: The evaluators behind the count

The composition of the judging panel was no accident. The judges brought specific institutional knowledge that shaped how submissions were evaluated, and the panel, which included expertise in machine learning infrastructure, creative direction, engineering leadership, product strategy, and enterprise architecture, had a combined perspective that resulted in a highly rigorous evaluation environment.

The evaluation criteria were formalised across four dimensions: Creativity & Originality (30%), Technical Execution (25%), Viral & Cultural Potential (25%) and UX & Storytelling (20%). Judges looked at working prototypes, product narratives, technical architectures, user experience decisions – not presentation slides. This is a significant distinction. Slide-based judging rewards communication skill over product quality. Prototype-based judging shows the real gaps between ambition and execution.

Rajeshwari Sah, ML engineer at Apple, brought expertise in multilingual AI systems, LLM-powered assistants, retrieval-augmented architectures, and production ML infrastructure. Her evaluation criteria emphasised the gap between the prototype and the deployable product – scalability, robustness, and responsible AI design. From Apple’s position at the intersection of multimodal AI and consumer hardware, Sah was positioned to assess whether projects had genuine production potential or were solving problems that would collapse under real-world constraints.

Yauheni Kruk, art manager at Meta, currently working on the globally recognised VR title Beat Saber, brought a lens shaped by years of delivering high-impact visual experiences across gaming and immersive media, including World of Tanks Blitz, Forces of Freedom, and Transformers: Reactivate. His background in creative pipelines and cross-functional team leadership made him a credible evaluator of projects that required both technical execution and coherent visual and experiential direction.

Ícaro Valgueiro Malta Moreira, Staff Software Engineer at Meta working on metaverse infrastructure, brought more than a decade of experience spanning full-stack systems, mobile platforms, game development, and cloud infrastructure. His focus was explicitly on teams that combined technical ambition with user-centred thinking — work that demonstrated real potential beyond the hackathon submission itself.

Sidhesh Badrinarayan, Senior Software Engineer and Tech Lead at Google, has worked on AI infrastructure for agentic advertising systems, LLM evaluation pipelines for Google Slides, and multimodal experiences at Amazon Alexa. He brought a specific and technically demanding bar: he was looking for projects that moved beyond simple prompt engineering to demonstrate stateful agentic reasoning capable of handling complex, multi-step workflows. Most hackathon projects operate on stateless interactions; his criteria pushed teams toward architectures with genuine persistence and decision-making depth.

Tatiana Andronova, Product Design Lead at Tabby, with over a decade of experience designing digital financial products used by millions, evaluated work through the lens of usability, trust, and scalability in high-stakes environments. She also runs Design Warmups, a community initiative for designers, and brings a sharp eye for whether teams are translating ideas into clear, intuitive user experiences or simply demonstrating features.

Kateryna Tertiienko, Tech Lead at Infonetica, brought 20 years of hands-on experience building and scaling production systems across startups and regulated industries. Her particular interest was in how teams use AI tools in production settings without sacrificing critical thinking and technical rigour, a counterweight to the tendency in hackathons to treat AI-generated output as a substitute for sound engineering fundamentals.

Sergey Polyashov, Chief Operating Officer at Toloka and formerly a senior engineering leader at Microsoft (Web Data Platform, Bing Shopping) and Yandex (video search and recommendation systems), evaluated submissions from the perspective of someone who has built ML-driven platforms at genuine scale. His focus on data, machine learning, and measurable user value gave him a basis for distinguishing teams with credible product instincts from those with technically impressive but directionless builds.

Kshitij Aranke, Data Engineer at ElevenLabs, brought eight years of experience building and scaling data-intensive systems across high-growth startups and large-scale technology companies, including Amazon, LinkedIn, Vouch Insurance, and dbt Labs. Given ElevenLabs’ position as the leading provider of AI voice synthesis and audio generation, its presence on the panel also signalled that audio quality, voice coherence, and audio pipeline architecture were genuine evaluation dimensions — not just aesthetic considerations.

Sanjana Arun, Product Manager at eBay, specialises in AI-driven search, advertising, and personalisation systems that determine how visibility and relevance are allocated across one of the world’s largest digital marketplaces. She contributed a product strategy perspective that the panel otherwise might have lacked. Her explicit interest in how AI systems shape user behaviour, create durable value, and solve the cold start problem pushed evaluation beyond technical execution toward questions of market viability and ecosystem dynamics.

Kundan Sharma, IT&D Solution Architect specialising in procurement transformation and enterprise AI, brought a business and operational lens that grounded evaluation in measurable outcomes. His background across product management, engineering, and DevOps gave him an end-to-end perspective on whether solutions were innovative in isolation or genuinely practical for real enterprise deployment.

Egor Grositskiy, art director with a proven track record shipping successful VR, mobile, and interactive titles, evaluated submissions at the intersection of visual direction and user experience. His career spans both high-level creative strategy and hands-on artistic execution – from directing the artistic vision of the critically acclaimed Beat Saber to developing concept art and illustration across a diverse range of projects. That dual fluency gave him a credible basis for assessing whether teams had a coherent visual system behind their work or were simply generating outputs without deliberate design intent. With deep expertise in visual development, concept art, and the full art production pipeline, he was well-positioned to judge whether creative AI was genuinely expanding what teams could make or substituting for the thinking that makes a product resonate.

Additional judges also joined the evaluation panel, further broadening the range of expertise applied to submissions.

Mentoring as operational infrastructure

One of the more consequential design decisions of the event was to not treat mentorship as a community benefit, but rather as operational infrastructure. It does make a difference. Community support means showing up and being willing. Operational infrastructure means systematic delivery, structured timing and measurable impact on outcomes.

The mentorship system ran for the duration of the build sprint, April 23 to April 28. Four parallel session tracks ran alongside the building: idea validation sessions in the opening days; private 1:1 check-ins to unblock teams mid-sprint; open office hours for domain-specific questions on AI, storytelling and UX; and pre-demo reviews to sharpen submissions before the deadline. Each format had a set time and an expected output – not free-wheeling conversation but directed intervention with a specific purpose. Mentors hailed from organisations such as Yandex, Meta, Amazon, Google, Hilti, TecStation, Trili Tech, Yellow Media and Arbuz.kz, specialising in everything from generative models to distributed systems, blockchain infrastructure, product strategy, go-to-market execution, UX design and data engineering.

The literature on hackathon outcomes has consistently identified the quality of mentorship as one of the critical factors that distinguish projects that achieve deployable quality from those that do not. The mechanism is not mysterious: expert intervention at the right moment — when a team is about to over-engineer an inference pipeline, or has framed their product for the wrong audience, or is making a model selection decision without understanding the latency implications — can redirect weeks of wasted effort in a single conversation.

The mentor roster reveals the range of expertise the system made available.

Pavel Khotin, Engineering Manager at Yandex, brought profound experience in mobile development to teams navigating the engineering decisions that sit between a promising AI concept and a product that actually ships on a device.

Asutosh Mourya, Engineering Manager at Trili Tech, covered an unusually wide surface area — design, Java, backend architecture, frontend, project management, business development, and R&D — making him particularly useful for early-stage teams that needed to make rapid decisions across the full stack rather than optimise within a single layer.

Puneet Nagpal, Director of Marketing, worked on the gap that kills more hackathon projects than bad code: the failure to translate a technical capability into a story that an audience cares about. His focus on creative strategy, go-to-market execution, and brand storytelling gave teams a framework for thinking about who their product is for and why those people would choose it.

Anton Solomonov, Data Engineer, focused on teams with ambitions beyond the demo – those trying to build applied AI and production-grade data systems with measurable real-world impact. His specialisations in operational AI, workflow integration, and production systems meant that teams could pressure-test their architecture against what deployment actually requires, not what a prototype can get away with.

Miles Wong, Chief Product Officer and Angel Investor at TecStation, brought an investor lens to the mentorship system. His focus on Web3 infrastructure, product scaling, and venture building created an unusual dynamic: teams received feedback not just on how to improve their hackathon submission, but on how to think about the project beyond the event itself. His presence made him explicitly useful to any team with a path to real-world adoption and the ambition to pursue it.

Murtuza Merchant, a crypto and blockchain professional, specialises in translating complex Web3 architectures into clear product strategies, navigating the regulatory and market considerations that determine whether a blockchain solution achieves adoption or remains an internal proof of concept. For teams building at the intersection of AI and decentralised infrastructure, his combination of DeFi expertise and ecosystem strategy was directly applicable.

Evgenii Garde, Head of Marketing for Tool Services at Hilti GB, brought a perspective that is often absent from hackathon mentorship: what it takes to get AI, IoT, and SaaS products adopted inside traditional industries. His offer to validate ideas against real user pain points and design for adoption in established sectors — not just tech-native audiences — gave teams a useful corrective against building for an imaginary early adopter.

Assiya Jaisheva, Design Lead at Arbuz.kz, worked with teams on UX refinement, product design strategy, and design systems. Her focus on cross-functional collaboration meant she could operate at the boundary between design decisions and engineering constraints — exactly the conversation that determines whether a product feels finished or provisional.

Asif Eqbal, Software Engineer at Meta, focused on the backend decisions that determine whether a system can survive real load: distributed systems design, architecture scaling, and the engineering trade-offs that separate a working demo from a production deployment. For teams building anything that would need to handle real-world traffic, his expertise in system performance and architectural soundness was a direct asset.

Additional mentors also joined the programme during the sprint period, contributing further expertise across the session tracks.

What this means for the business

The projects born out of this hackathon are not isolated experiments. These are early indicators of a structural shift in the way AI-native media products are being conceived, architected, and evaluated. Investors, product leaders and platform strategists should pay attention to several patterns.

First of all, the intersection between emotional intelligence and content generation is moving from research to prototype. MoodScore demonstrates how the technical ingredients for emotionally adaptive media — facial analysis, real-time inference, audio synthesis, narrative branching — are now at a quality and price point that small teams can assemble working systems in seven days. When experimentation becomes this inexpensive, iteration also becomes that much faster.

Second persistent AI identity is a class of product. Phantom is a first prototype, but the architecture behind it – memory systems, adaptive persona evolution and autonomous content generation – is being built from components that are more and more available as APIs and open-source frameworks. The real question for the creator economy is not whether synthetic personas will become commercially significant, but how quickly the tools will mature and what platform infrastructure will be needed to support them.

Third, the input modality for creative tools is changing. Lore’s voice-to-produced-track pipeline exemplifies a broader shift: the interfaces to creative AI systems are moving away from technical controls (knobs, parameters, code) and towards expressive human inputs (voice, gesture, emotion, description). This changes who has access to these tools and therefore who participates in the creative economy.

Fourth, cultural reconstruction is an emerging application domain. Projects like GhostWriter.fm point toward AI systems capable of operating on cultural knowledge at a level of specificity — era, style, production aesthetic, and collaborative voice that goes well beyond general-purpose generation. This has implications for music licensing, cultural heritage applications, and entertainment IP.

Fifth, the evaluation criteria at this hackathon — weighted toward viral and cultural potential alongside technical execution — reflect a maturing understanding of what AI-native media products actually need to succeed. Technical quality is necessary but insufficient. A film that adapts to viewer emotion is technically impressive; whether it creates an experience worth having is a different question, and one that requires genuine product and design thinking to answer.

Not just a competition, a convergence

At the Creative AI & Digital Media Hackathon 2026, it wasn’t the individual projects that mattered most. Taken together, the submissions revealed a pattern of convergence.

Audio generation, synthetic identity, multimodal agents, emotionally adaptive content, autonomous publishing systems are no longer mere experiments in research labs and startup garages. Small teams, working under time and resource constraints, are integrating them in working prototypes. The tools have matured to the point where the bottleneck is no longer access to capable AI components — it is the creative and product thinking needed to combine them into experiences worth having.

That change has implications well beyond the hackathon. This suggests that the next generation of AI-native media products won’t be built by large organisations with proprietary access to models, but by builders who understand the technical architecture and the cultural context of the experience they are building. The gap between research prototype and deployable product is closing, and events like this are where you see that closing.

The question the industry should be asking is not whether AI will reshape creative media. That question is answered. The question is, which design patterns, architectures and experience paradigms will define the category – and where are the early experiments to answer it happening right now?
